The Palazzo Moltrasio, better known as the Villa Passalacqua, is one of the grandest villas on Lake Como and is a national monument for Italy. It was constructed in the 1700’s by Count Passalacqua and over the centuries has played host to numerous artists and statesmen including Napoleon Buonaparte, Winston Churchill and Vincenzo Bellini (who wrote his most famous operas here Norma and Sonnambula) or more recently many international celebrities.
The villa was designed to have a simple symmetrical façade with a richly elaborate interior. The ceilings on the public rooms as well as the bedrooms are ornately decorated with paintings and magnificent frescoes by the famous neoclassical artists Albertolli and Appiani, beautiful sculptures, Persian rugs, tapestries and Venetian chandeliers.
The villa Passalacqua
(2800 m²) offers 9 impeccably deluxe suites totaling 14 bedrooms and sleeping up to 25 people:
- Entering the main floor through the spectacular and stately hall with marble staircase will certainly give you the awe-inspiring feeling which will follow you through the rest of the villa: the living room with piano and lake views, the oval shaped formal dining room with marble columns and frescoed ceiling, the more casual dining room filled with period Tuscan furniture and sitting area, two professionally equipped kitchens, a study room with computer facilities, a relaxing ‘wine’ sitting room with fireplace, a cinema room with mahogany bar and fireplace, a billiards room with snooker table, a pizzeria with antique pizza oven.
- Going to the first floor you’ll find the impressive music room with high ceilings and frescoes and a beautifully restored antique Blüthner piano that once sat in the Leipzig Concert Hal, a children’s play room, a gym with fitness equipment, a sitting area. . The bedrooms are all unique with quality furniture and beautiful art. Some of the bathrooms have Philippe Starck designed wash basins and bathtubs while others have antique large bathtubs and ornate wash basins.
For larger groups the 6 bedroomed Villa Bellini
(450 m²) for up to 11 people, located in a separate area at the bottom of the park (see map
), is available upon request. Decorated with fine antiques and elegant Italian designer furniture, this charming villa is set over 2 floors and composed of a dining and living room with fire place, a fully equipped kitchen, 4 bedrooms with double bed, 1 bedroom with 2 single beds, and 1 bedroom with single bed. The property is children friendly. In the back garden next to Villa Passalacqua is a wonderful outdoor play area with beautiful wooden slide, swing set and rope climb. There is a large children’s play room on the first floor next to the music room and a small children’s play room next to the kitchen.
This five star property runs from high up in the village of Moltrasio all the way down to the lake's shore. The park is considered as one of the most historic and finest on Lake Como with beautiful rose gardens and stunning flowering plants that adorn the property. There are different and beautiful themes to each of the terraces. One is an ornate Tuscan Garden with boxed hedges, another is a fruit orchard, a vegetable garden, an orchard of olive trees and a flower garden. The terrace around the swimming pool is surrounded by lemon and olive trees and an amazing 200 year old greenhouse. There are 11 working fountains on the property that add cool freshness to the hot summer afternoons. The property ends at the lake’s shore. For those who enjoy boating, waterskiing or just swimming in the Lake, the Villa Passalacqua enjoys a lovely marina with its own private dock.
The villa has an excellent and convenient location on Lake Como within walking distance to the small village center of Moltrasio with restaurants, shops and a ferry station. It’s situated only 3 km from the posh Cernobbio and 8 km from the lively town of Como. Rent a boat or take a ferry to discover all the typical villages along the lakeshore towards the famous tourist resorts of Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna.
